The objective of this 1 hr. lecture is to provide a comprehensive overview of the most current understanding of heartworm disease in the US.  It will include information from the most recent American Heartworm Society symposium and guidelines covering: heartworm lifecycles, testing, prevention, mosquito vectors, compliance issues/ lack of efficacy, resistance and pathogenesis in the dog. Special attention will be paid to disease prevalence and need for year round prevention.

The lecture will begin with a short overview of increasing threat of Lyme disease and co infectious agents in veterinary and human medicine. The attendees will then become familar with the latest methods to diagnose Lyme disease and the different strengths of currently available tests and treatment options for clinical dogs with Lyme disease. Following that there will be a detailed discussion on Lyme prevention strategy including screening and treating none clinical dogs and a very aggressive prevention package will be described including tick removal, tick control and vaccination.
